Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan has held the State government guilty of serious lapse in getting the State’s due share of the Parambikulam-Aliyar waters.

In a statement here on Thursday, he said Tamil Nadu had to release 7.25 tmcft of water from the Parambikulam-Aliyar reservoirs into the Bharathapuzha basin and 12.3 tmcft of water into the Chalakudy basin under the Parambikulam-Aliyar pact.

Tamil Nadu had to ensure this before using the water from the reservoir for its use.

However, Tamil Nadu had diverted more water than its eligible share to the Tirumurthi dam in its territory this season. Kerala did not respond to the situation in time even though the disaster management cell had warned the State of impending drought conditions months ago.

He held the State government responsible for the destruction of standing paddy crop in 10,000 acres in Palakkad district because of its lapse. The remaining paddy crop in around 30,000 acres in the district and also other crops were now under threat for want of water to irrigate the fields, he said.
