A high-level meeting convened by Ports Minister K. Babu here on Tuesday decided to sanction Rs.4.08 crore to resolve the problems of the seaward breakwater system at the Vizhinjam harbour. A press note quoting Mr. Babu said the decision to accord administrative sanction for the project was based on a report submitted by an expert committee after a visit to the harbour earlier.
The Minister also announced an outlay of Rs.17 lakh to conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment survey and prepare a model for the development of the Alappuzha port.
The project involves the construction of a breakwater, trestle, and passenger terminal. The survey would be carried out by KITCO (Kerala Industrial and Technical Consultancy Organisation).
Mr.Babu said the project included the construction of an inland marina, theme park, water sports and recreational facilities, bus terminal and commuter facilities to transform the Fort Kochi- Alappuzha waterway into a major tourist destination.
