Rajya Sabha member V. Hanumantha Rao has hailed the Centre's decision to conduct enumeration of castes and the below poverty line census.
Mr. Rao, who is the convener of the Parliamentary Forum of OBC MPs, in a statement termed the decision as a historic one. It would give a boost to the OBCs, who were being deprived of their due share in every field.
This exercise would give a clear picture about the population of OBCs, both in the cities and in the rural areas, and their socio-economic conditions.
He said the caste-wise data would put at rest the repeated queries and questions by the courts on reservation policy matters relating to OBCs.
It would help the Centre and State governments to implement welfare measures for OBCs and other deprived classes.
He said that the data collection would help the Planning Commission to decide on allocation of funds for those sections.
