Policewomen in plainclothes will be on the look-out for men harassing women on the streets, in an attempt to curb sex-crimes against women here.
The exercise is being launched at many places in the city but the largest posse of such policewomen will be out on Park Street. It has already begun yielding results. 16 youths were nabbed trying to harass the disguised policewomen who were being monitored by undercover policemen. The women police personnel were dressed in jeans-tops, and salwar kameez .
This is in addition to the installation of CCTV cameras at all susceptible spots in the city.
A technology-enabled alert system, developed by the West Bengal University of Technology for Kolkata Police has also been put in place. This will send alerts to police stations if any abnormal behaviour is noticed on a street.
Since the recent Delhi gang-rape, cases of molestation of minors, gang-rapes and killings of women have continued to pour in, calling for increased police vigilance. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Saturday that Kolkata has some 60 mobile police units against Delhi’s 700 and more are needed.
