The South District police have arrested two men who allegedly stole jewellery while posing as policemen.

The duo targeted women and tricked them into putting all their expensive gold articles in one bag and then stole a few pieces or ran away with the bag itself, said the police. The most recent case reported against the two was registered earlier this month, when they introduced themselves as policemen to a Vasant Kunj resident who was waiting for an auto-rickshaw, and drove away on a two-wheeler.

“Although dressed in plain-clothes, they managed to convince the woman that they were cops. She heeded to their advice of keeping her gold chain and bangles in her purse. One of them took her jewellery filled bag and sped away on a bike,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) B.S. Jaiswal.

In April too they had cheated another woman in R.K. Puram. While the victim was putting her jewellery into the bag, one of the two accused offered to help her. When the complainant reached a nearby market, she discovered that the accused had taken her gold bangles.Mr. Jaiswal said the modus operandi used in the two incidents was similar. Based on enquiries, the police zeroed in on the accused — Sagar and Akhlakh. Based on a tip-off about their plans to come near the Saket Metro station to dispose off the stolen articles on Saturday, they accused were arrest.

They have confessed their involvement in several cases along with three other persons, who the police claimed are notorious cheats. “Gold jewellery worth Rs.3.5 lakh has been recovered from them,” said Mr. Jaiswal.
