Two persons, including a Class VIII student, were killed when a car hit a group of students in front of the NSS High School at Karuvatta near Harippad in the district on Thursday.

The deceased were identified as Aswin Dev, 13, son of Sahadevan of Ayyarathu in Karuvatta, and Ravi, 60, of Sreebhavanam, in Thottappally in the district. The car, which was passing through the National Highway (NH)-47, hit a group of children who were waiting to cross the road. The driver had lost control of the vehicle, hit an autorickshaw, and finally came to a halt after ramming a nearby tree. Ravi, the owner of the car, who was sitting beside the driver, soon fell unconscious.

The injured were rushed to the Government Medical College hospital at Vandanam here, and Ravi and Aswin Dev were declared brought dead at the hospital. The driver of the car, Saji, 41, and the students Sreejith, Adarsh, and Sajith are under treatment at the hospital.

The bodies were handed over to relatives after a post-mortem examination.
