An assistant sub-inspector has been detained on the charge of raping a girl at Pitra in Tripura’s Gumti district and police authorities have also ordered a probe into an allegation that a few officers attempted to hush up Saturday evening’s incident.

Informed sources said the detention of Mangal Debbarma, attached to the Pitra outpost, was possible only as local residents protested. It is alleged that the ASI lured the Class XI girl, whose family he knew, to visit Durga Puja pandals and took her to a deserted brick kiln and raped her. But she raised an alarm and passers by rescued her, However, the ASI fled the spot

The women police at the Udaipur station swung into action after the victim lodged a complaint on Sunday. It is said some police officers tried to pressure the girl’s family into settling the matter amicably but protests by locals forced the police to initiate action. The women police detained Debbarma on Sunday evening.
