Implementation of new regulations by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has led to a drop in pesky calls and SMSes and the number of complaints filed by harassed consumers has come down considerably, the government informed the Rajya Sabha on Friday.

On average 47,454 complaints were received a month (from March 2010 and March 2011). However, with the implementation of the new regulations on September 27, 2011, only 5,979 complaints were received till November 15, Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology Milind Deora said in a written reply.

Mobile service in LWE areas

Replying to another question, Mr. Deora said the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF,) used to strengthen the telecom network in villages and remote areas, was formulating a scheme to provide mobile services at 1,898 locations in nine naxal-hit States out of the 2,199 sites where the Home Ministry had requested that mobile towers be set up. “This will be helpful in providing mobile communication services in the Left wing extremism-affected areas.”
