Traffic along Tirupur-Kangayam highway was disrupted for a few hours on Monday as shopkeepers and traders operating their business along the stretch adjacent to the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) bus depot resorted to a road blockade agitation.

They came into the streets in protest against the eviction drive carried out by the highways officials, which, according to the shopkeepers, have been ‘selective in nature’.

“When the officials showed hastiness in removing the structures projecting from our shops to the roads, why they avoided an office of a trade union representing the employees of TNSTC that was standing right on the road?,” quipped Abu Tahir, who runs a tea stall in the locality.

Tense situation

The situation became tense after the crowd refused to move away till the office of the trade union was removed.

The officials concerned finally buckled to the demands of the crowd and removed the trade union office, which had been set up on a makeshift structure.
