He got trapped between iron pole and mud-laden lorry that fell on the pole

TAMBARAM: A 19-year-old youth was crushed to death when a mud-laden lorry fell on an pole in Kadaperi, Tambaram, on Friday.

He was the lorry cleaner and giving instructions to the driver as it was backing up on Kulakkarai North Street .

The lorry was bound for a construction site and travelling in reverse on the street that was less than 12 feet wide.

After the vehicle travelled for some distance, its rear wheels got trapped in loose mud on the street and tilted to its right and landed on the iron pole and a compound wall of a house.

The victim, A.Rakesh of Nedunkundram village near Tambaram, was walking near the pole. He was taken by surprise and trapped between the pole and the lorry .

Eye-witnesses told reporters that they were unable to help as the youth came under the weight of the lorry that was carrying about 10 tonnes of hill mud. Had the youth ducked, he could saved himself, they said. Residents informed the Fire Control Room in Tambaram and the Tambaram police station.

Firemen rushed the spot and mobilised a crane with the help of the residents, pulled the lorry slightly away from its place and removed Rakesh.

He was rushed to a hospital nearby, where he was declared dead on arrival.

He was trapped for nearly 20 minutes before help arrived.

Kadaperi residents said that the Tambaram Municipality had sunk sewers on the street some months ago, but road restoration works were not complete and the vehicle’s wheels had trapped in the same cavity left behind by the road digging works.

In a similar incident that took place in Gowrivakkam in December last year, a road contractor died when he was trapped between a compound wall and a lorry engaged by him when it was backing up.

Police said that the lorry driver fled the spot after the incident, adding further investigations were on.
