Two youths tested their hands in chain snatching, targeting an aged woman at Nagamalai Pudukottai. However, one of them ran out of luck and was caught by the public, though the other made good his escape on Tuesday.
The police identified the arrested accused as M. Farook (23) of Thumbaipatti, who graduated from a city college.
Employed in a private concern, he was struggling to meet his day-to-day expenses.
Farook got acquainted with Pakkeer while playing cricket.
Then the duo planned the crime, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Samayanallur) T. Kanthasorooban said.
Farook chose Nagamalai Pudukottai for striking at lonely women, he added.
While Pakkeer was waiting at a distance on his bike, Farook snatched the nine-sovereign gold chain of N. Kamala (63) from NGO Colony, while she was returning home after visiting a local temple at around 11.30 a.m.
Even as Farook took to his heels, the woman raised an alarm drawing the attention of the people in the street.
After a hot chase, the locals caught Farook and recovered the chain from him.
However, Pakkeer escaped from the scene.
