COIMBATORE: Praveen P. Nair has done this textile city proud by clearing the All India Civil Services Examination with 21 {+s} {+t} rank.

The result came as a surprise to the electrical and electronics engineer. “I expected myself to be in the 50-plus rank category; 21 {+s} {+t} was definitely a surprise,” he said over phone from New Delhi.

Mr. Nair quit his job at a multinational company in Bangalore to pursue his dream. “The credit for inspiring me to take up civil service examination goes to my college senior Mr. Nagarjan.”

He made his first attempt in October 2007 and the second the next year. Finally he quit his job to take it up full time.

“My parents were supportive of me when I decided to quit,” he says. His father R. Prabhakaran retired as an assistant general manager in Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited. His mother P. Santhakumari works at the R.S. Puram branch of the Indian Bank.

Mr. Nair said he wanted to serve the people after entering service. He had his schooling at Lisieux Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Coimbatore, and engineering from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, Rajasthan.
