A young moto racing enthusiast, who after failing to get sponsors resorted to burglary to make it big on the track, was arrested by Avadi police on Sunday.

Police sources said 20-year-old Anandan alias Akilan (20) was behind a spate of burglaries in Avadi and adjoining areas in the last one year. He was arrested by a special team at the Avadi bus terminus around 7 p.m.

The youth, who hails from Tiruchendur, confessed to police that he turned to crime to purchase a high-end racing motorcycle to contest in the regional and national racing circuits.

Akilan had participated in moto racing events in Irungattukottai, near Chennai, and the Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore last year, the sources said.

Inspector of Police (Crime), Avadi police, K. Kumaravelu said that a special team was formed after several houses were burgled in Avadi, Thirumullaivoyal and adjoining areas in a span of few months.

“Investigations revealed that the prime suspect was Akilan, a resident of Attangal, Red Hills. He is suspected to be involved in at least seven cases of burglary in the Avadi police limits,” he said.

The accused would commit the crime mainly during daytime and only take away the gold ornaments. When apprehended he was in possession of 40 sovereigns of jewellery worth about Rs.12 lakh, Mr. Kumaravelu said.
