In an effort aimed at reducing the stress of prisoners at the Coimbatore Central Prison, the officials there have introduced yoga and sports.
According to S. Rajendran, Superintendent, around two weeks ago, following the advice of Additional Director General of Police, Prisons, J.K. Tripathy, the prison staff introduced volleyball, tennikoit, badminton, chess, carom board, etc.
Mr. Rajendran said that the prison staff allowed the prisoners to play near their blocks for an hour in the morning – 6.30 a.m. to 7.30 a.m. – and an hour in the evening – 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The prison had 1,800 inmates in 10 blocks, separated into remand prisoners, and convict prisoners.
He said that the introduction of yoga and sports had brought about a change among the prisoners in that there seemed to be a growth of positive mindset. After their sports and supper, they retired in their cells. Likewise in the morning, they were keen to participate in the sports activities.
Such a measure had reduced the incidences of prisoners causing trouble within the prison camps, he added.
Meanwhile, four prisoners – Prabhu, Manoj Kumar, Arjunan and Saravanan – reportedly attempted suicide after prison officials attempted to search their cells for banned items.
The prison staff took them to the prison hospital, where they were treated for cut injuries.
