The yard re-modelling work, which is going on in full swing is all set to improve the punctuality in operation of trains through Madurai railway junction.

The work, part of the Dindigul-Madurai doubling project, is all about making the existing single line operation of trains for a small stretch between Madurai and Koodal Nagar railway stations into a double line operation, besides improving the signal system along with the points and crossings.

“Once we complete the work, we can simultaneously receive and despatch trains into the station without the trains having to wait outside the station for want of signal, since we will have dedicated lines for up and down trains,” Divisional Railway Manager A. K. Rastogi, said.

The second broad gauge line could not be laid up to Madurai railway junction while taking up the doubling work between Madurai and Dindigul railway stations because of operation of metre gauge trains from Madurai then. Hence, the work of re-modelling of yard was also could not be taken up then.

“The single line operation remained a bottleneck in traffic movement as simultaneous receipt and despatch of trains in and out of station was not possible. We were losing punctuality in operation of trains for few minutes on this account,” Mr. Rastogi said.

With all the metre gauge lines having been either converted into broad gauge lines or closed for gauge conversion, the yard re-modelling work was now possible.

The Railway Construction wing has already laid a new broad gauge line between the bridge across the Vaigai and the Madurai railway junction. The trains from Southern districts were being operated on this line presently, while the existing line has been removed for minor re-alignment by providing new points and crossings, Deputy Chief Engineer (Constructions), S. Manoharan, said.

Hundreds of men and several cranes and earth movers were deployed for the work that was going on.

In the absence of inter-locking signals, that have been removed to take up re-modelling work, the trains were being operated with manual signals.

The DRM said that the civil work would be over soon following which the work of rearrangement of signals would be taken up. “Only after thoroughly testing the new interlocking system of signal, we will resume normal operation of trains from the junction,” he added.

Southern Railway has been terminating the Vaigai Express and Pandian Express at Koodal Nagar railway station besides regulating and partially cancelling several trains in order to take up the yard re-modelling work.
