This summer, school students will have the option of learning skills that will help them adjust better in college.
Engineering colleges and teachers are planning a series of activities to help students, especially those in their last year of school, to prepare for college by training them in basic science and communication.
The English Language Teachers’ Association, India, has planned to hold workshops for Tamil-medium students in English speaking and writing at a school in Valasaravakkam.
“In that area, we can target the most number of students from Tiruvallur, Chennai and Chengalpattu. The idea is to train them in basic English communication skills so they are not intimidated when they go to college,” said K. Elango, head, department of English, Anna University.
Other institutes such as Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering and Rajalakshmi Engineering College have planned on a set of activities for schoolchildren in their college campuses.
“Two months of vacation is the best time to get children interested in practical aspects of engineering,” said Thangam Meghanathan, chairperson, Rajalakshmi College of Engineering, who plans to use the college’s lab facilities to hold science workshops for schoolchildren.
Sri Venkateswara College has partnered with Springboards, a training firm, to provide skill-based coaching to students of classes XI, X and XII. Sports activities such as cricket, football and volleyball have been included in the schedule to make the camps engaging and enjoyable.
English language teachers will hold workshops for Tamil-medium students at a school in Valasaravakkam
