The Department of English at Government Arts College, Tiruvannamalai, on Saturday organised a workshop on a method of literary criticism called “new criticism.”
V. Rajagopalan, former Head of the Department of English, Madras Christian College, delivered guest lecture. He said new criticism is a method that focused on text rather than author or social contexts and “new criticism” evolved as a school of criticism by 1930. New criticism was ontological review rather than epistemological review. It adopts intrinsic approach or textual approach as against extrinsic approach adopted by most other methods of criticism, Mr. Rajagopalan said.
