TIRUNELVELI: Construction workers and labourers of unorganised sector staged a demonstration in front of Deputy Commissioner of Labour Office at Palayamkottai here on Monday pressing various demands.

The protestors said the thousands of petitions carrying the grievances of the construction workers and unorganised sector labourers had not been scrutinised by the officials concerned for the past several months and hence, the genuine grievances of the beneficiaries had not reached the welfare board.

While the village administrative officers “refuse to certify the grievances,” many of them demand hefty bribe to register the complaints or grievances.

“For no reason, the officials reject the petitions of the labourers of unorganised sector, which should be stopped,” said district general secretary of AITUC, R. Kasi Viswanathan.

He complained that most of the promises given by the welfare board when it was established had not been fulfilled.

General secretary of Construction Workers’ Association P. Aramvalarththanathan presided over the demonstration, which was inaugurated by CPI district secretary R. Shanmugavel.
