More than 20 persons – including a man – were injured when the load-carrying autorickshaw in which they were travelling skidded and fell on its side on Thursday. Police sources said that about 30 persons (mostly women) of Aayilpatty in Rasipuram Taluk were working in the 100 days job guarantee scheme of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS).

According to police they were returning home on the Mettalla to Aayilpatty section of the Attur Main Road after completing their work at Karlakadu village. It is learnt that around 4 p.m. on Thursday they were travelling near the agricultural land owned by Thandavarayan when its driver reportedly applied the brakes to avoid hitting a man who suddenly crossed the road.

Sub Inspector M. Govindaraj said that the autorickshaw fell on its side injuring 20 women of whom two of them sustained head injuries. “Fourteen of them were taken to the Rasipuram Government Hospital while 10 of them were referred to the Salem GH,” he said and added that six other women were directly taken to private hospitals in Rasipuram and Salem.

“A case has been registered under sections 279 (Rash driving), 337 (Causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 338 (Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code and investigations are on,” he added.
