CHENNAI: A construction worker died after a partly demolished portico of the Kalaivanar Arangam, caved in here on Wednesday.
According to police sources, the victim, whose identity is yet to be established, was trapped in the debris. He succumbed to grievous injuries. The body was shifted to the Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem. The Triplicane police said the victim was a native of Bihar.
A worker who was involved in pipelines works outside the site, said the incident occurred around 11 a.m., when the victim accidentally stepped into the disintegrated portico that was pulled down minutes ago. According to him, nearly 15 workers were involved in the demolition. S. Ramasundaram, Principal Secretary, Public Works Department, ruled out the possibility of awarding any compensation to the victim, stating that the contractor involved in the demolition was responsible for the incident. “The contractor should have taken a group insurance that would possibly reimburse their claims. Compensation from the State government would be possible only if the death was due to a natural disaster,” he said.
The demolition of the auditorium began two weeks ago. The office of the auditorium has been shifted to Quaid-e-Milleth Manimandapam and the State Information Centre that was functioning on the premises would be shifted to Bharathi Illam at Triplicane until the new auditorium is constructed.
