To be completed by next March
Work on repairs to the crumbled walls of the moat surrounding the historic fort in Vellore is going on at a cost of Rs. 46 lakh.
According to sources in the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the ASI sanctioned the amount in 2012-13 for re-constructing the fallen portions of the moat wall in the northern and western sides of the moat.
Starting from the northern side, the work was taken up, and at present, the work is going on in the western side of the moat.
The ongoing work would be completed before March next year, according to the sources.
Once the ongoing work is completed, the ASI would be seeking funds to take up the work of reconstructing the remaining stretches of the crumbled portions of the wall on the western side.
The same stones found in the original structure were being reused to the maximum extent, said a spokesman of the ASI. Already, the required funding has been sanctioned, sources added.
