Work for laying the fourth main drinking water pipeline is expected to be taken up soon to cater to the needs of people in Tuticorin. The new and additional pipeline from Vallanad will be laid at an estimated coast of Rs. 282 crore, sources said here on Saturday.
The administrative sanction for this project is expected soon. Once the project is made operational, people residing in Tuticorin Corporation limits will get drinking water on a daily basis. A total of 97 million litres per day will be supplied from the Maruthur dam through Vallanad water head works. Currently, 25 million litres of drinking water is being drawn at regular intervals and distribution is done once in five or six days.
Besides, residents of 60 wards including the five newly incorporated wards in Tuticorin Corporation, educational institutions and other commercial establishments will also benefit from the facility. A model of the new drinking water project is displayed at the government exhibition underway at Pearl City beach. Tuticorin populace can get an exposure to the new facility at the 45-day exhibition that commenced here on September 6.
