Members of National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW) affiliated to the Communist Party of India (CPI) along with the locals staged a dharna with empty pots inside the municipal office here on Wednesday condemning the non-supply of potable drinking water to Narimedu First Street in the town for a long time.

Led by S. Subbulakshmi, district secretary of the NFIW, they raised slogans demanding immediate supply of drinking water to this area, housing over 300 families.

No water for 20 days

Ms. Subbulakshmi said that the non-supply of drinking water for the past 20 days has badly hit the residents.

R. Murugesan, municipal commissioner, pacified the women and assured to take steps for the supply of drinking water, following which they dispersed peacefully.

Members of the NFIW held a wailing agitation with empty pots in Periyar Nagar area on Tuesday evening demanding regular supply of drinking water.

They alleged that the water supplied by the municipality is contaminated.

They also sought action against the residents who tap water illegally using motors.
