Women raised a banner of revolt and demanded relocation of a liquor shop run by the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) here on Wednesday.

The customers of the TASMAC outlet at Mela Kodangipatti in Natchiarpatti Panchayat of this taluk in this district often indulged in fisticuff using abusive words with scant regard for women in the vicinity.

Women demanded immediate relocation of the liquor shop and submitted petitions in this regard to the authorities concerned but there was no effort to shift it. So, they decided to lock the shop. The local unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) extended its support.

The Srivilliputtur Tahsildar, Jayanthi, TASMAC manager and other officials rushed to the spot and assured the residents that the shop would be shifted by December 15.

Based on this assurance, the agitation was withdrawn.
