The district witnessed spate of protests with people taking to streets, protesting the non-grant of flood-relief and compensation, at several places here, on Thursday.

At Thirumarugal, people of Segal village staged a demonstration at the Thirumarugal bus stand, alleging delays in relief disbursement.

According to the protesters, of the four wards of Thirumarugal Panchayat, relief of Rs.1,500 per family was disbursed only to three wards.

“Constant assurances of relief disbursement on time has not borne fruit even with ‘Pongal' round the corner,” a protester told The Hindu. However, they protesters dispersed after assurances from the administration that disbursements would be made eventually.

The line up to Pongal festivities was replete with demonstrations at Velankanni, with protests at Paravai, Rettaladi, and Sitharkoil. Paravai protests witnessed massive participation of women, with over 100 of them taking part in a 150-member demonstration. Over 160 people participated at Rettaladi, and 75 people at Sithakoil.
