Villagers frown at bad roads

KARUR: Women participated in large number in most of the gram sabha meetings held in the 158 village panchayats in Karur district on Thursday. In Therku Manikkapuram village in the Manjanaickenpatti panchayat, SHG members got an assurance from Collector A Karthik that the bad road in the village would be set right soon, besides securing promise on construction of a shed to hold their meetings.

There were eight SHGs in the village and members of four of them asked the Collector to immediately look into their long-pending demand for good approach road to their village.

Understanding their plight, Mr. Karthik directed the officials to prepare an estimate and undertake repair works on a war footing. Again the SHG members pointed out that there was encroachment on about 100 metres on the approach road, which the Collector ordered immediate eviction.

Elected representatives should help create awareness on conservation of water sources and on disaster management among the people, Karthik said. . He also called upon the public to help conserve water sources by preventing their pollution with plastic products.

He also announced the commencement of conservation camps to clean up water sources in all the villages in Karur district. The Namadhu Gramam scheme should be popularised among the masses.

The Collector also said that there should be adequate awareness on disaster management among the people so that in times of emergency they could react with alacrity. Elected representatives could play a vital role in shaping public opinion, he observed.

The Manjanaickenpatti panchayat president, Maragadam Tamilselvan, the Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, K. Rajamani, the Project Officer, Mahalir Thittam, P. Renuka Devi, the Assistant Dirctor, Panchayats, Perumal, and the Kadavur Panchayat Union Chairman, Selvaraj, were present.

The Collector then visited a handloom unit run by a 13-member strong women SHG in the Therku Manikkapuram village to have a first hand assessment of the work going on there.
