The members of women self help groups from 10 blocks in the district actively participated in the competition for preparing conventional dishes held at the Thandalai panchayat on Wednesday.

The competition was a part of the three-day International Women's Day celebration organised by the district administration.

Variety of dishes

Vying with each other, the women prepared delicious dishes that ranged from ‘Kozhukattai' to ‘carrot halwa' and from ‘keerai adai' to ‘keerai vadai'. A few others also came out with traditional nutritious gruel made of black gram.

With mouth watering smells pervading the area, they supplied samples of the dishes to Collector S. Natarajan who was surprised over not only the type of dishes, but also the mode of preparation using the conventional mud pots.

Goal

Mr. Natarajan appealed to the women to develop their skill for achieving the desired goal of surmounting economic backwardness.

N. Jeevakani, District Revenue Officer, P. Ramachandran, project officer, Mahalir Thittam, A. Nagaraj, Thandalai panchayat president, P. Krishnamoorthy, programme officer, ICDS and V. Thilagam, District Social Welfare Officer, and others were present.
