A woman and her son-in-law were arrested and remanded to custody for charging exorbitant rates of interest on loans and holding on to the title deeds of debtors even after they had repaid the money.

Anjalai and her son-in-law Puratchi alias Nesan (30), had allegedly been lending money at high interest rates to residents of Pulianthope and Otteri areas for some time now. E. Jayakumar, a resident of Kosapet in Perambur had taken a loan of Rs. 1.5 lakh and claimed he had returned the money with interest. But Anjalai, who had taken the title deed of his house, threatened to kill him if he did not return the money with interest. Jayakumar complained to Otteri police, who registered a case and arrested the two.
