TIRUNELVELI: Police have arrested a woman for allegedly murdering her daughter-in-law in demand of more dowry.

Police said the 21-year-old victim of Pullukaattuvalasai near Courtallam was married to S. Ayyappan, a labourer of the same area, 18 months ago. Her parents reportedly gave 25 sovereigns and cash as dowry at the time of marriage. Not satisfied with this, Ayyappan and his mother S. Velmayil (51) reportedly tortured her and consequently the matter was brought to the All Women Police Station of Tenkasi 45 days ago. Though the matter was settled amicably then, Ayyappan and Velmayil allegedly tortured the woman.

Against this backdrop, Ayyappan beat his wife on Wednesday and asked his mother to set her ablaze, it is alleged. As Velmayil allegedly set her daughter-in-law ablaze, she sustained serious burns and was admitted to the hospital by the neighbours. After giving a dying declaration, the woman succumbed to burns.

Based on the declaration by the victim, the police arrested Velmayil and a hunt is on for Ayyappan.
