CHENNAI: A woman who allegedly tried to use a fake credit card to purchase gold jewellery in a shop in T. Nagar was detained by the Mambalam police on Tuesday.

According to police sources, J. Manjula (34) of Kundrathur selected a three-sovereign gold chain and offered to pay with her credit card. When the cashier asked for proof of identification, the woman said she did not have one on hand.

On swiping the card in the electronic data capturing machine, it became evident that Manjula was using a fake credit card. The shop staff alerted the Mambalam police who took custody of the woman. The accused told investigators that one Manoj had given her seven fake credit cards to purchase gold jewellery and give him a share.

Further investigation is on, the sources added.
