A 36-year-old woman was arrested, along with her son and daughter, for strangulating her husband on Wednesday night.

According to Kurusilapet police, Parimala and her two children – Thamizhselvi (20) and Parthiban (19) – strangulated Meganathan (54). They were residents of Pudurkolakuttai in Vaniyambadi taluk.

Police said the cause for the murder was family dispute. Thamizhselvi was in love with her aunt’s son Madhesh but Meganathan was opposed to the marriage. The family told police that Meganathan was not supporting the family. He was neither paying for food expenses nor funding the education of his Parthiban, who was pursuing first year diploma in a private engineering college near Tirupattur. They were dependent on about 1.5 acres of land owned by them for their livelihood. Police said that Parthiban was not in talking terms with his father for nearly four years and the situation worsened with Meganathan vehemently opposing the marriage of Thamizhselvi with Madhesh.

On Wednesday night, the trio had mixed poison in the curry kept for dinner. They served it to Meganathan and he fell unconscious. The three strangulated him, police said.

There were signs of struggle and scratch marks on Parthiban, police added. The accused admitted to the crime during inquiry.

Police registered a case and arrested Parimala, Thamizhselvi and Parthiban.
