CHENNAI: A 30-year-old woman Uthiramala of New Colony, Alwarthirunagar, was arrested on charges of cheating another woman to the tune of Rs 17 lakh here on Wednesday.

The Commissioner of Police had directed the Central Crime Branch (CCB) police to register a case against the accused following a petition received from Chandrika Bagyanath of Anna Nagar. In her petition, she had complained that Uthiramala had received Rs 17 lakh and promised to sell her landed property measuring 1,408 square feet at New Colony. The money was paid in March 2006 and they had entered into an agreement, she noted.

But, the complainant realised that Uthiramala had sold the property to another person. As she failed to return the money, she approached the police seeking justice. The CCB police arrested the woman and based on her confession, a case of cheating was registered.

When she was produced before a court in Egmore, the magistrate remanded Uthiramala to judicial custody. Further investigation is on, a police press note said.
