CHENNAI: CPI (M) State secretary N. Varadarajan on Friday called upon the government to withdraw the hike in annual fee for students admitted under the management quota in self-financing engineering colleges.

In a statement here, he said increasing the fee from Rs.32,500 to Rs.62,500 was unjustified. It would affect poor and middle class students. The government announced the new fee structure on Thursday. It acting on the recommendations of the Justice Balasubramaniam Fee Committee.

“Already there are complaints that self-financing colleges are collecting more than what has been prescribed. The hike will further affect the students,” Mr. Varadarajan said.

He said the government should follow the old fee structure and take severe action against college managements that charge more.
