A Sambar deer that was found lying with bruises on its body near the Varattupallam dam in Anthiyur block of Erode district died on Tuesday.

A team of forest personnel, while patrolling in Varattupallam area, found the injured deer on Tuesday early morning and alerted forest officials.

“The three-year-old male deer came to the dam in search of water. The deer received serious injuries after it was attacked by wild dogs,” a forest official said.

Veterinarians attempted to treat the animal. But the animal did not respond to the treatment and died. The carcass was left for the vultures and other scavengers.

Since water sources inside the forests are dry, wild animals are coming out in large numbers in search of water. The dam has little water that attracts a significant number of animals. “The concentration of the wild dogs near the dam was high. These predators often attack the deer that come in search of water,” the official added.
