TIRUCHI: The Tiruchi Corporation's move to establish a modern slaughterhouse in the city has kicked up a public row. It has to shelve its plans to set up the facility at Kottapattu following opposition from local residents and some councillors.

But the Mayor, Sarubala R.Tondaiman's announcement at a meeting of the Corporation Council last week that the slaughterhouse would be set up at the Panchapur sewage farm site had come as a surprise for many.

For, Panchapur is situated quite far away from the city and it's a moot point whether the traders, now operating near Bheema Nagar, would agree to move to the new place. Transporting the animals and the meat back to the city could be a problem.

Residents of Panchapur too could resist the move. Faced with a High Court directive to construct the slaughterhouse within six months, the authorities seem to be in a hurry to complete the project in time. The civic body should do a study before taking a decision, observe some councillors.
