When a speeding van plunged into a well near Paanaankulam, about 25 km south of Tirunelveli on the Tirunelveli - Nagercoil National Highway, some years ago, several travellers in the van were killed.

While announcing ex-gratia for the family of the victims, the State Government then declared that strong protective walls with big granite stones would be constructed around all wells near highways so that even vehicles moving at a high velocity would be prevented from plunging into the well though they dashed against the wall.

However, the protective wall constructed around a well, situated about 500-metre north of Pannirupidi Ayyan College and brimming with water, is missing, posing a serious threat to the vehicles plying at high speed on this road.

Since four-laning work is going on now at this spot, drivers have to be extremely careful while crossing this dangerous point.
