Welfare measures of the State government are being extended to all people without any discrimination on the basis of caste, religion and political affiliation, Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy has said.

He was speaking at official functions organised at Pagandai Cross Road, Kaduvanur and G. Ariyalur in Rishivandhiyam and Thirunavalur blocks on Friday, for distributing free colour television sets and gas connections.

Mr. Ponmudy said that the Kalaignar Housing Scheme was formed to make Tamil Nadu a hutment-free State within six years. As many as three lakh hut-dwellers in Villupuram would benefit from the scheme.

He said that a large number of new schools were started and existing ones upgraded, taking the State to the forefront in the educational sphere. Of 1,104 panchayat unions in Villupuram district, about 1,028 were covered so far under the free colour TV scheme and the remaining would be covered soon, Mr. Ponmudy said.

The Minister gave away 11,822 TV sets to residents of Vanapuram, Seepanandal, Pasar, Kaduvanur, Ilayanarkuppam, Athiyur, G.Ariyalur, Cholavandipuram and Vengur, and 527 free gas connections.
