TIRUNELVELI: The Collector G. Prakash distributed welfare assistance worth Rs. 64,560, to the physically challenged at a function at School for the Blind at Palayamkottai on Wednesday.
The Collector, who disbursed 20 tricycles, four wheelchairs, 23 free bus passes and four other equipment to the beneficiaries, said the survey conducted a fortnight ago had revealed that the district had 25,669 physically challenged persons and a database in this connection had been created by Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, which would help the officials and policymakers to understand the actual needs of these people and the assistances they had received so far.
"If the physically challenged have not obtained any assistance from the Government so far, appropriate steps will be taken to provide them some sort of aid at the earliest. Those who have not given their names during the survey should register their names with the Block Development Offices or the municipalities concerned on September 11 through applications," Mr. Prakash said.
He said that steps would be taken to supply free Braille textbooks and music instruments to students of the School for the Blind. Infrastructure of the school would be strengthened through Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan programme.
