: At a time when a possible water scarcity is looming large, many parts of the city received a welcome shower on Wednesday.

After dilly-dallying for the last two days despite the sky remaining overcast, it finally rained in the morning for nearly two hours.

The city experienced steady drizzle that caught many schoolchildren and office-goers unawares. Madurai airport recorded 4 mm of rainfall till 8.30 a.m. on Thursday.

The showers, if continued for a few more days, may ease the drinking water situation for the city, especially for the added areas, such as Tirupparankundram, Avaniapuram, Harveypatti and Tirunagar, which are dependent on the Vaigai water for daily supply.

The Corporation officials are seeking water release from the Vaigai dam to recharge the infiltration wells to maintain the water flow.
