Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) founder Vijayakant's wife and party leader Premalatha said here on Saturday that the DMDK is determined to contest independently sometime in the future and make him the Chief Minister.
But, as of now, the DMDK's alliance with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) was strong and the combine was determined to win the Assembly elections, she told The Hindu while campaigning at Senthamangalam in the district.
“It is only six years since the party was founded and we have witnessed its growth over the years,” Premalatha said.
She added that “a lot of ground work should be done to make the DMDK self-reliant”.
On when this would happen, Premalatha said politics was highly unpredictable and it could happen anytime. She expressed confidence that Vijayakant would be the best Chief Minister the State had ever seen.
On the allotment of Murasu symbol for independent candidates contesting in constituencies other than where DMDK was contesting, Premalatha expressed concern that it would definitely affect the votes that should be polled by candidates of the AIADMK and its allies.
On star campaigners for the party, she said that her party did not need anyone else as Vijayakant was himself a star of three decades' standing in the Tamil film industry.
