Krishnagiri: National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned two watershed development programmes in Krishnagiri district at Rs. 1.5 crore for a period of four years.
Of this, a sum of Rs. 74 lakh has been allocated for implementation of the Kothakondapalli watershed in Hosur block and Rs. 79 lakh for Saragapalli watershed in Kelamangalam block. With this, the number of watersheds implemented in the district has increased to seven, said bank's Assistant General Manager V. Thirumalai here on Wednesday.
The watershed programmes already under implementation in the district included Venkateshapuram watershed in Shoolagiri block and Betamugilalam watershed in Thally block, Irudukotta watershed by MYRADA, Hosur and Chikkapoovathy watershed by EAM Water Foundation.
People's participation in community development was the main objective of these programmes.
The watershed community contributed about 16 per cent of the total amount. During the first phase, the watershed community was taken on a field visit to get a first hand experience about the programme.
The second phase of the programme covered various activities including treatment, drainage line treatment, conservation of water harvesting structures, training and demonstration and livelihood opportunities to poor and women. The total implementation area of the Kothakondapalli watershed was 1310.22 hectares, he said.
The project facilitating agency, Sreenivasan Services Trust, Hosur, in association with the village watershed committee would jointly implement the project.
It would be monitored by NABARD and the Department of Agriculture. The total area of the Saragapalli watershed was 1,467.50 hectares, Mr. Thirumalai said.
The watershed approach would enable the farmers to conserve water and utilise the same during lean months.
