“Business is really good and encouraging”
: Even before the characteristic chillness of January is to give way for warmness that heralds the onset of the summer, the twin towns of Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai have started getting several truckloads of watermelon from Dindigul and other districts.
As watermelon being cultivated in Cuddalore, Tindivanam, Puducherry and Dindigul is known for its sweetness and fleshy tissues, most of the traders here show interest in dealing with the fruits only from these areas.
Though one kilogram of watermelon is now sold for Rs.20, the price is expected to come down to settle down around Rs.10 a kg in the days to come and with an increased arrival.
“Even though we’ve started selling watermelon even before the onset of the summer, the business is really good and encouraging,” says M. Murugan from Seevalaperi, who has set up his roadside stall near Lourdunathan Statue in Palayamkottai.
