ERODE: An overhead water tank that is in a highly damaged condition in a panchayat elementary school compound is in danger of collapsing at any time, resulting in what could be a major disaster.
About ten years ago, the tank was constructed in Thandampalayam Panchayat Elementary School compound and Cauvery water stored in it and supplied to the village.
But it began showing signs of deterioration, with cement pieces breaking off and creating apprehension about its stability.
The founder of Appu Play Forum S. Manoharan told The Hindu, “Schoolchildren are playing under the tank during afternoon and evening. If anything adverse happens, the children will be seriously affected. So, the District Administration should take stringent action in this regard, by demolishing the tank and constructing a new one.”
The villagers said the local MLA R.M. Palanisamy had given an assurance that when the Kollankoil water scheme was implemented, a pucca overhead tank would be built just 100 metres away. That would take about a year. In the meantime, the district administration should strengthen the damaged overhead tank.
Officials of the local panchayat said that at present they were providing water to Thandampalayam and ten nearby villages, from the tank.
If the tank were to be demolished, the water supply system in the area was likely to be affected. The people would be the ones who would ultimately suffer.
