Tuticorin: The Department of Health on Friday ascertained the cause for outbreak of excessive vomiting and loose stool at Puthiamputhur earlier this week which resulted in hospitalisation of 58 persons to growth of Coliform organism in the stool culture.

S. Uma, Deputy Director of Health Services said that the reason was traced after the King Institute of Preventive Medicine, Guindy, conducted stool culture and hanging drop tests of stool samples taken from the affected area.

Because of open defecation, Coliform organism had mixed with underground water source at Melakulam in the village from where the drinking water was drawn for four overhead tanks at Puthiamputhur, Melamadam and Vallinayakapuram.
