About 6,000 cusecs of water was released into the Coleroon River from Mukkombu (Upper Anicut) near Tiruchi on Tuesday.
The water, mostly rain flow from Namakkal and Erode districts flowing from the Bhavani and Cauvery rivers, were let out into the Coleroon River as it presented an opportunity to re-charge the water table on the Coleroon.
The Coleroon River bed serves as the source for some drinking water schemes, including the Drinking Water Augmentation Scheme for Tiruchi currently under execution.
The release of the water expected to recharge the filter points of the water sources.
Meanwhile, the spell of summer showers experienced in the district over the past few days, was broken on Tuesday. Dry weather prevailed across the district.
Ponnaniyar recorded the maximum rainfall of 29.18 mm in the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday. Sirugudi recorded 21 mm and Vathalai 12.88 mm during the same period.
