Supply of drinking water from headworks of the Allapuram-Thorappadi Combined Drinking Water Scheme to areas in Thorappadi will be restored shortly following the completion of the work on arresting leaks in the main pipeline at Erayankadu, according to Janaki Raveendran, Commissioner of the Vellore Corporation.
Thorappadi is not getting the river water for the last four months owing to the work on plugging leaks. Instead, the area is being supplied water from the lake in Thorappadi because of which supply is irregular.
Participating in a monthly meeting of the Vellore Corporation Council here on Monday, she responded to a complaint from 50th ward councillor T.A. Murugan of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam that water supplied from the wells dug in the Thorappadi lake was salty and should be chlorinated.
She said that following the arresting of leaks, the daily supply to the collection well of the scheme located in Rajiv Gandhi Nagar has been enhanced from 40,000 litres to 1.5 lakh litres in the wake of the completion of the work.
The tanks fed by the collection well were filling up in one day against four days it took when there were leaks in the main line.
“We are now conducting trials which will go on for a week. Once the trials are over, the frequency of water supply to the house taps in residential areas will be determined. Since the lake water cannot be chlorinated, we will consider mixing of lake water with river water and supplying it through the distribution lines,” Ms. Raveendran said.
Replying to the request of Mr. Murugan for repairs to undulated road behind the Central Prison for Men and the road behind the Special Prison for Women, P. Karthiyayini, Mayor of Vellore, who was in the chair, said that steps would be taken to repair the roads.
K. Suryachari (AIADMK), 41st ward councillor, said that the laying of cement roads prevented rainwater harvesting as it blocked seepage of rainwater. He wanted the cement roads to be replaced by tar roads wherever they were damaged. He wanted all works in the Corporation to be taken up through the standing committees before being placed in the agenda of the Council meeting.
The Mayor interrupted and asked him to confine his speech to the standing committee on education headed by him. Presidents of the respective committees should speak on their panels , she said.
