CHENNAI: In an effort to prevent flooding during the ensuing monsoon, desilting of important water courses and stormwater drains is being accorded priority by the local bodies in the southern suburbs of Chennai.

Work on desilting of ‘Nattu Kalvai’ the main water channel at Tiruneermalai town panchayat in Kancheepuram district has been initiated.

The 1.5 kilometre channel is an important water course that carries the excess rain water from residential localities to the nearby Tiruneermalai lake. It was filled with hyacinths and silt due to poor maintenance, resulting in flooding of residential areas during the monsoon in 2005 and 2006.

The work began recently on the instructions of the Director of Town Panchayats K. Gopal.
