Unidentified masked men on Saturday murdered a watchman at a mill owner's house in the Karumathampatty police station limits. The police said the two men stabbed to death C. Hemraj, 26, said to be of Nepali origin, when he resisted their efforts to burgle the house.
The incident happened around 1.30 a.m. The two men scaled the eight-foot compound wall of mill owner C. Nataraj's house. Hemraj, who was sleeping near the door, saw the men jump into the compound. He raised an alarm. The burglars rushed towards Hemraj and tried to overpower him. One of them stabbed him in the neck.
Hearing the noise, S. Kondammal, the cook from nearby Kittampalayam, rushed to the first floor to alert Nataraj. By the time the two rushed down, Hemraj was lying dead in a pool of blood.
The burglars fled when Nataraj activated the burglar alarm. He had deactivated it to prevent false alarms since the system came into contact with branches of nearby trees.
The Karumathampatty police rushed to the spot. Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore Rural Police, E.S. Uma visited the spot.
