Rs.5.25-crore proposal for tourism development of Tarangampadi coast

NAGAPATTINAM: All 561 town panchayats in the State are now implementing the solid waste management scheme and about 50 town panchayats had implemented it effectively by producing ‘manure’ from degradable waste and making plastic goods by recycling the non-degradable waste, said Commissioner of Town Panchayats K. Gopal on Thursday.

Mr. Gopal and Collector M. Jayaraman, who inspected the solid waste management scheme being implemented in Tarangampadi and Velankanni town panchayats in Nagapattinam district, said that members of several women self-help groups in the town panchayats were given training and the SHGs set up small units for recycling plastic wastes.

As a result, both the town panchayats and the women SHGs get income from the solid waste management scheme, he said.

The Commissioner said that Tarangampadi town panchayat had been implementing the solid waste management scheme successfully and wanted all the town panchayats to strive to implement the scheme. To create awareness among the people of the solid waste management, garbage is being collected at doorstep and segregated as degradable and non-degradable.
