The District Industries Centre has warned of criminal action against manufacture, storage, and sale of electrical appliances without Bureau of Indian Standards certification here in the district.

According to an administration release, manufacture, storage or sale of electrical appliances without ISI certification would invite penal action and warrant slapping of criminal charges against offenders.

Therefore, all electrical appliances including water heaters, iron boxes, switches, switch boards, tube lights and bulbs, PVC wires, cables, circuit breakers, electrical stoves, fans, and electrical radiators, must bear ISI certification as per Electrical Appliances Quality Control Order 2003.

If inspections at the manufacturing units, storage godowns, and shops reveal manufacture and sale of such substandard appliances without due BIS certification, dealers and manufacturers concerned would be liable to criminal charges. Further, the General Manager of DIC is vested with powers to initiate suo motu criminal proceedings against the offenders, the release said.

According to the release, the manufacturers and dealers of construction steel materials are bound by the Steel Control Order, 2012, that came into force in September 2012. Under this, it has been made mandatory for all steel products to bear ISI certification. This would cover construction steel and light engineering steel products including TMT bars, rods, and plates.
